Stem Cells Able to Repair Damaged Heart Muscles
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News 29 November 2005
An international medical conference being held in New South Wales this week, will highlight the latest advances in stem cell research and how it can repair damaged heart muscles.
More than 400 cardiologists and other health workers from 14 countries will attend the event in Newcastle.
Newcastle-based interventional cardiologist Rohan Jayasanghe says experts will outline how damaged heart muscles can now be treated using a patient's own bone marrow stem cells.
"Stem cells harvested from the patient himself or herself will be utilising a bond modification to regenerate a damaged heart muscle and also to regenerate blood vessels where blood vessels have been obstructed," he said.
Dr Jayasanghe says the conference will also feature live simulcasts of cutting edge surgery from hospitals in New York, Korea, Melbourne and Lake Macquarie.
"The operation is being transmitted as it is being carried out from wherever in the world so that a moderating panel can communicate with the operator live and the audience can see how things are done," he said.
